Important Facts About Car Spare Tires

The presence of a spare tire is crucial to ensure driver safety and comfort during a trip. The main function of a car spare tire is to serve as an emergency replacement when one of the main tires is damaged — such as being punctured or blown out. Using a spare tire allows the driver to continue driving to the nearest repair shop.

Here are some key facts about spare tires:
• A spare tire is generally intended for temporary use only.
• It has a speed limit (usually a maximum of 80 km/h) and limited driving distance.
• It must be maintained regularly to ensure it’s always ready for use.
• Electric vehicles (EVs) are usually not equipped with a spare tire due to limited space.
• There are two types of spare tires:
 – Temporary spare (donut/space saver): Smaller, thinner, and lighter than standard tires. Designed only for short-distance emergency use.
 – Full-size spare: Same size and type as the other tires on the vehicle. It can be used for a longer period but still requires proper inspection and maintenance.

Although rarely used, a spare tire still needs regular maintenance, such as checking its air pressure. Rubber that has been stored for a long time can age and lose its elasticity.
Tristar Rental understands the importance of spare tires — they are included as part of the components that are regularly maintained and monitored.
